PLE Research

We want to share with you an exciting new research opportunity for Yorkshire Terrier health. In the Fundraising section is an article outlining the issues surrounding the life threatening condition of Protein Losing Enteropathy (PLE). Yorkshire Terriers are 10 times more likely than other breeds to develop PLE. Although PLE affects other breeds, it is believed that the condition in Yorkshire Terriers may be unique.

This project will be aimed towards developing a genetic marker-based risk test specifically for Yorkshire Terriers, allowing breeders the ability to make informed decisions with a view to eventually eliminate PLE in Yorkies altogether. Research is already underway at Cornell University under the direction of Dr. Kenneth Simpson, thanks to an initial ACORN grant from the AKC Canine Health Foundation.

The Yorkshire Terrier Club of Anerica Foundation (YTCAF) have joined forces to support this important research.

Welcome

The YTCA Foundation (YTCAF) welcomes you to our new and revised web site and hopes that you find the information here informative, interesting and hopefully answers your questions.  Our mission is to provide educational opportunities and to support medical research that benefits the health and quality of life of our beloved Yorkshire Terriers.  It is the Foundation's intent to provide you with information about Yorkshire Terrier health issues, health projects that the Foundation is funding (or has funded) and other health resources and links.  It is also the Foundation's intent to develop and communicate information regarding the health, care, breeding and quality of life of Yorkshire Terriers to Yorkie owners, breeders, and simultaneously to veterinarians.

The YTCAF is a non-profit charitable corporation that is run by a volunteer board with no administrative overhead expense.  The Foundation relies solely on donations in order to fund significant research.  If you would like to help, there are a variety of ways that you can.  You can make a memorial to remember a very special friend or special pet or you can honor someone or their accomplishments or just make a donation via our donor program.  You can:

Stem Cell Webinar

canine stem cell research

Recently, Dr. Larry Snyder hosted another Webinar for the Foundation on Adult Stem Cell Research. Everyone who had the opportunity to attend learned a great deal about this earth shattering research. Dr. Snyder has treated dogs, cats, donkeys, and even a black bear. His presentation included slides of the progress of an 18 year old German Short-Haired Pointer who was administered stem cell. One of Dr. Snyder's colleagues performed stem cell on a dog with liver shunt and remarkably the liver regenerated in six short weeks. This state of the art research improves and progresses year after year.

For everyone who missed this outstanding Webinar, the Foundation has made it available on a disk.
